Acrylic

There are two types of acrylic and both can achieve good results with a laser. Extruded acrylic is softer than cast acrylic, can scratch easier, and may contain impurities. Extruded acrylic cuts with a very clean edge and engraves clear which make it a good choice for color filled projects. Cell cast acrylic tends of be of higher quality than extruded, but it's also more expensive. This type is often used for aquariums, awards, and other products that require shaping or machining of the final product. It can also cut with a clear edge but engraves with a frosted white look so it is usually the preferred choice for trophies and awards.

Alder

Alder

Alder more specificly Red Alder is a common wood used in laser engraving. Alder is common in the Northwestern United States. It is a light blonde to light red wood and engraves many shades of brown which makes it a good choice for photos or other  highly detailed images. It is a hardwood so it holds up better against dents than Pine, Cedar and other softwoods. It is not the best choice for outdoor signs or plaques.

Basswood

Basswood

Basswood also known as Linden or Lime in England is also a light color blonde hardwood. It is a little better than Alder for achieveing highly detailed images mainly because it's grain is less defined and therefore has less of a chance of messing of a picture by crossing over a persons face ormaking small fonts hard to read. It is virtually  interchangeable with Alder but we use it more since it is more common in Northeastern United States and because it is a softer hardwood it is easier to cut through with the laser. All of our "Rustic Plaques" are Basswood.

Cherry

Cherry

Cherry wood can present colors from dark deep rich red to pale pink almost white. It engraves fine detail as well but since the natural color of the chosen wood will represent the whites in the artwork then Cherry limits the amount of lighter colors that can be simulated. Cherry turns dark at very light power settings so it can be tricky for inexperienced laser companies to achieve quality results. Because Cherry is a hardwood thicknesses up to about 3/8" can be cut through with the laser as opposed to 3/4' for Pine.

Glass

Glass

Glass can be etched or microfractured with ourlaser engravers. This process creates a frosted look on glass and can make great wedding favours. The artwork chosen for glass must be black and white however since shades of gray can not be accoplished on glass. Mirrors can also be ethed by etching though the lead back revealing an image on the front.

Granite/Marble

Granite/Marble

Granite, Marble and other polished stones can also be engraved with out lasers. The laser removes the polished surface revealing the unpolished inner stone. This contrast can be manipulated to show great detail. We stock Absolute Black granite tiles for just this application. We can also get granite in many shapes and sizes as well.

Mahogany

Mahogany

Mahogany is another red colored wood that can achieve nice detail. Because Mahogany is a naturally oily wood it repells water better than most hardwoods and is an ideal wood for outdoor application. Mahogany was used for the decking of Chris Craft boats because of there resistance to water.

Maple

Maple

Maple is a common hardwood especially here in Vermont. Maple is a light blond wood and is very dense. It engraves a light shade of brown and cuts with a nice carmel edge. It is a little more difficult to achieve darker shades of brown so Basswood or Alder are generally suggested over Maple for highly detailed artwork. We carry many styles of cutting boards that can be engraved and are made from Hard Maple.

Rustic Log

Rustic Log

Our "Rustic Log Plaques" are litterally a slice of a Basswood tree. We carry 2 shapes oval and rectangular. The shapes vary with the shape of each tree so no two are identicle. Because it is Basswood it still engraves great detail but some brown spots may be seen since the cut is going accross the grain and not with it. We can also make larger custom size rustic plaques if requested.
